Hand Printed Originals

Jo specialises in creating small, limited edition prints whereby the lino is carved and then hand-printed as many as 7 separate times to create the different coloured layers you can see. During this process each piece of paper has to be registered perfectly on top of the inked up lino to be printed. This ensures that the image matches precisely as more colour and details are added with each print. Once dry, you can feel the ink that’s been used on the paper’s surface !

All hand-printed originals are on archival, acid free paper, printed using quality inks. They are all signed with the title and edition information hand written on each individual print and professionally mounted with a backboard making them ready for framing.

Prices range from £30 - £175 for single, signed, mounted prints.

Here are some of the mounted prints that are available please contact Jo for more details and prices.

Reduction linocut print process

Stages 1-2

Many of Jo’s prints start with a walk, sketch and photo followed by a more detailed still life drawing which is then transferred onto lino.

Stages 3-6  (Colours 1-3)

The first cutting or carving of this lino removed the white sections marked on the lino. After testing colour options the colour ink is carefully mixed. Then, using special ink rollers, the ink is applied to the lino’s surface. Each piece of paper is placed on top of the lino and printed manually. Ink is re-applied to the lino for each piece of paper before it is printed. The maximum size the edition can be is only ever the number of pages printed in the FIRST round of colour printing.

Here the first colour to be printed was the pale lilac. The lino was then cut and printed a second time with the mid lilac-blue and the third round was the darker cornflower blue.

Stages 7-10 (Colours 4 -7)

The fourth round of carving and printing was the greeney-yellow, followed by a mid green and then 2 darker greens.

This print started with 24 pages but after 7 rounds of testing and printing the final edition size ended up being only 20.

Handprinted limited edition prints are extremely time consuming. On average EACH of the bluebells prints has taken 2+ days. Here is the final image along with the carved lino
